Smooth Relocation to New Zealand
Essential Guide for Shipping Personal Belongings
Planning an international move to New Zealand? Understanding biosecurity regulations, customs requirements, and prohibited items before packing your household goods can save you time, money, and unnecessary stress. New Zealand enforces strict import controls to protect its environment.
This guide covers key information about moving personal belongings to New Zealand, including customs clearance, MPI biosecurity rules, restricted items, and required documentation.
Why Biosecurity Matters in New Zealand?
New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), New Zealand Customs Service, and Immigration New Zealand regulate all incoming shipments.
To prevent the introduction of pests and diseases, all household goods and personal effects may be inspected. MPI may review documentation and conduct physical inspections upon arrival.
If risk items are identified, they may be:
Treated (fumigation or cleaning)
Re-exported
Destroyed
All associated costs are the responsibility of the owner.
